Nick's Bday Workout

You gotta love when your birthday falls on your workout day right?  I created this one just for Nick.  The general consensus was that it "looked easy on the board."  But as many of you know...the simpler it looks, the harder it usually is.  What is your philosophy for your birthday?

Do you...

Take the day off?  Work out early so you can enjoy the rest of the day?  Do something fun instead?  No wrong answers here, just curious!  Enjoy some pics!

Update

Hey all!  Sorry for the lack of frequent posts lately.  We've been busy with lots of behind the scenes stuff, but we'll get back to it after the holiday weekend!  We've been working on some stuff that I'm really excited about.  More details to come... Everyone have a fun and safe weekend!  Don't forget our grand opening in just a few weeks!

(Even with my crazy schedule I make time for some fun too!)

Sun and Play

The sun has finally come out!  I just want to remind you all to spend sometime outside playing and enjoying life.  There are multiple benefits to being outside, including getting some fresh air, vitamin D and more.

PLAY is actually something really important to our health.  I know many of us work very hard and that is great.  I would argue however, that if you want your work time to be more productive, you should definitely

include some time for leisure and play.  Even animals take time to play with each other.  I watched a video a while back of a polar bear coming to play with a chained up Husky.  He could have easily made the Husky a meal but instead decided to come back and play with the dog every day for a week.  What do you like to do for outdoor play?  Do you purposefully or spontaneously play?  When is the last time you tried something new?

While you're outside playing, you can soak up some important Vitamin D.  I'm not going to even begin to go into the in's and out's of all that is Vitamin D, but I will ask a couple questions to get you thinking...  Do you get enough sun where you live to soak up enough Vitamin D?  If not, are you taking a supplement?  Is your sunscreen really protecting you from what you think it is?  Why aren't cases of Melanoma going down if we're all using sunscreen?  I encourage you to read more from Mark Sisson here: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/vitamin-d-confounding-factors/

I'll be out playing this weekend, I encourage you to do the same!

Rock On!

Cranking out some pushups

Experiment + 60lbs

Is CrossFit sustainable?  Is better health achievable for more than a couple months?  Can one completely change the direction of his or her health later along in life?  I think the evidence points to a resounding YES.  First, look at that post workout smile!  Let's take a closer look at the evidence...

Bryan and Marlys started with us just over 1 year ago.  The first workout they ever did was this (without the added weight vest):

53
» IMG_4437.jpg

It took them both a little over 18 minutes to complete.  Just a few squats with no weight were difficult.  Pushups were done on knees and ring rows were setup at a very easy level.  Running was more of a shuffle and was not able to be done for even 400 meters continuously (1 lap around track).

Fast forward to now...

We decided to do an experiment.  They both started changing lifestyle and health before they came to see me.  But as of yesterday, Marlys is down 60 lbs and Bryan is down 70 lbs from the heaviest points in their lives.  The experiment was this:  Do the very first workout again but with a 60 lb weight vest on!  The results were pretty amazing...

Some of their comments from the workout:

"My knees were aching on the first run."

"It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."

"It was very enlightening."

It became very apparent how the amount of weight put stress and strain on the body.  It was a great reminder of why they made the change.  Looking back through their workout logs it is amazing to see the progress...  Deadlifting over bodyweight, running full miles non-stop, getting a pull-up, lifting heavy weights overhead, doing 10 pushups on toes, finding that "next gear" and SO much, much more.  Did I mention they are in their late 50's?

Bryan and Marlys are living proof that it is never too late to make a change.  They are a big inspiration in more ways than just the gym!  Enjoy some more pictures from the workout.

Health Tips

Buy Organic

Foods that were once thought to be very good for your health, are still good for your health. BUT, many of them also have added problems and dangers associated with them that they never had before.

There are some more commonly known problems such as the use of pesticides, toxins and other dangerous chemicals that now exist in non-organic foods. These can lead to various health problems and conditions. Just do a search for "side effects of pesticides" and see what you come up with.

But aside from these issues, there is a very big problem even worse than pesticides; Genetically Modified Foods. The US does NOT require labeling of GMO foods. Fruits and vegetables are some of the most commonly modified foods. They are created in labs and then patented as something the said company owns. There are no laws about the safety of these foods being put into distribution. They are only required to have a patent. Some foods that are VERY likely genetically modified are soy, corn and it's products (canola oil, high fructose corn syrup, etc.) and wheat.

So just by eating the way our pre-agricultural ancestors ate, we can avoid some of our present day dangers all together. We already know that grainfed animals are the "protein equivilant of cardboard." We also now know that there are some potentially dangerous effects of the other foods we are eating as well. So if we are trying to live as healthy and disease-free as possible, let's think more carefully about what we put in our bodies. Buying organic, grassfed, local products is good for the local community, good for your health, and good for future generations.

"A plant, fruit, or animal grown without the administration of artificial pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics or growth hormones (in the case of animal products), most closely replicates wild or untampered-with growing conditions" - Mark Sisson

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” ~ Thomas Edison
